Fairmont State expands degree, unveils program

FAIRMONT - Opening a community college headquarters, expanding anaviation airframe and power plant technician degree and starting anInternet degree program could be among future plans for FairmontState College's community college. Fairmont State College PresidentDan Bradley said he would discuss the projects with state lawmakersand the Higher Education Commission.

"We think they can be done with a reasonable amount of start-upmoney," Bradley said.

Under the proposals, the community college headquarters would beestablished at a dormitory on the main campus at a cost ofapproximately $1.6 million in renovations, Bradley said.

The college plans to add new residence halls.

Another proposal would expand the basic airframe and power planttechnician degree to high school and adult students statewide.

That will help prospective students land good-paying jobs andstimulate the economy, Bradley said.

"Right now, there are an estimated 300 well-paying jobs atBenedum Airport, and its Mid-Atlantic Aerospace Center is goingbegging because of the lack of Federal Aviation Administration-certified technicians," Bradley said.

As for the Internet-education program, Bradley said the schoolwould like to have offices throughout the region, so rural studentswould have a local contact.

Bradley, who started his job earlier this year, will announce theproposals this week as part of an overall plan to improve thecommunity college.

He said the ideas were established before he arrived.
